Labour's Legacy Lives On

Public Sector non-jobs are still being advertised in The Guardian (where else?), such as this one for a "Senior Diversity Policy Manager" with the police, attracting a salary of at least £60,000 "plus excellent benefits". It just goes to indicate how much waste there really is in the public sector, and how easy it will be to make huge savings without adversely impacting genuine front-line public services.

Sooner or later this garbage has got to go anyway. Today's task for the Coalition Government has been to identify where the initial savings target will be aimed; hopefully tomorrow it will be this kind of sheer waste of nonsense "jobs" that will be cut as a result, as part of that exercise.

Oh, and today's announcement is just an initial move, a decent down-payment as Burning Our Money puts it, just a week after getting access to the Government books and ledgers, to show the coalition means business and to stabilise the markets. I expect further such announcements every month or two for some time to come...

UPDATE 25 May: this short comment to a (very wrong!) Guardian editorial reminds us that the paper does very well out of advertising of such public sector vacancies.

  1. You would think public bodies would have got the message that we have to end this nonsense of non-jobs. They will eventually.

In the meantime we in the TPA will continue to campaign hard to expose waste, and get the best deal for taxpayers.

  2. Well done, TPA!

I suspect these bodies are making the most of the remaining time, while the Government is concentrating on the macro.

They are sneaking in as many of these "job" offers as they can in the meantime, presumably thinking that once they are in place it would be difficult to dislodge them.

I hope that turns out not to be so!
