Cable Unplugged

"It's all his fault!"

Vince Cable has "pulled the plug" (so to speak) on his position of Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats, purportedly as a result of having to put in a great deal of effort in his new job as the Minister in charge of the Business Dept.

Now, others have been able to handle two such positions simultaneously. John Prescott has been mentioned in an interview with "Saint" Vince, but as Cable said: Prescott isn't exactly a good rĂ´le model to quote...

Guido believes this is an early move to aid political detachment from the coalition, with the intention of resigning from the Cabinet in due course; though Cable has denied there is anything more to it than what he had already stated, regarding concentrating on his new ministerial job.

Probably the most likely replacement for Cable as Lib Dem deputy leader is (unsurprisingly) Simon Hughes. That could cause problems for the Coalition Government, as Hughes doesn't really seem comfortable with what has happened post-election; but if he concentrates on internal party matter first and foremost he could be a good enough choice.

As for alternatives: I'd quite like David Heath to take this on, as I have felt for some time that he has that level of capability and the right kind of outlook and manner. If he were to offer himself, I do hope his party gives him that chance to shine as Deputy Leader.
