What a shocker! However, I don't think Hazel Blears' admission of an "immigration free-for-all" was intended to come out that way, or be interpreted literally.Even so, it is an accurate assessment of the Labour approach to immigration, where I have worked during the time of a previous Labour government. It was essentially the same in principle then, though at least we had some border controls to speak of in those days.
On this occasion, "Chipmunk" Blears was clearly trying to brush the government's sins of the past under the carpet, as the quote of her statements goes something like this:
“Initially it was a kind of free for all. We had a big surge of asylum seekers, a lot of people coming as economic migrants, but through the route of asylum seeking. The government’s new points system is a much more reassuring position for people."Well, doesn't that inspire confidence? In the intervening years, the damage has already been done. The horse has bolted, so shutting the stable door now will be of very limited value. At least it might stop the situation growing significantly worse.
No: one thing one learns about Labour is that they always seem to have a vested interest in promoting open and unrestricted immigration, as those of us who have worked within the system (and are therefore able to appraise and understand what goes on) are very well aware. We have to learn the rules and laws, as well as what went before, so we know the changes and can easily see the pattern and deduce the thinking behind those changes. They always sell out this country in this and other respects, in pursuance of their own agenda, which never but never has anything to do with bettering the situation of and within Britain, except purely incidentally.
That is one of the most important lessons one can ever learn about Labour (and indeed the Left in general) in Britain, and usually elsewhere in the world as well.

It is..? Has anyone asked 'the people' if they are reassured?
There's a first time for everything
No; and Yes — in that order :-)
